Associates At This Law Firm Just Unionized! Will Associates At Other Firms Follow Along?

I get the feeling Outten is about to jump up in a couple 'best place to work' lists.

Large group of happy business people. Success. When working for a midsize firm, there are many things an applicant should consider. What are the firm’s billable hour expectations? Are they matching Cravath? Is there free Coca Cola? This list is not exhaustive; there are also public-facing concerns like is the firm heavily associated with a former president who may have committed treason? The newest thing to check for may be my favorite: is there an associate union? From Reuters:

Outten & Golden, a 65-lawyer U.S.-based law firm that represents plaintiffs in labor and employment litigation, said it has voluntarily recognized a union formed by its associate attorneys.

The union, Outten & Golden United, was a “logical next step” given the firm’s work representing workers and unions, including the Communications Workers of America, managing partner Adam Klein said Thursday.

“We’re very much supportive of the union movement,” Klein said. “We’re aligned with their interests.”

We will soon see how aligned Klein and his fellow partners actually are. A collective bargaining agreement is underway and Klein’s guess on what will be on it is as good as yours. Increased remote working accommodations? Clear cut hours that the firm is able to reach out to its associates coupled with a strong “no weekends” clause? Better dental? Hopefully the C-suite won’t be gritting their teeth too hard at the demands — wouldn’t be the best look for a firm that represents unions.
