Nightclubs and other large venues will be legally required to bar customers if they have not been vaccinated as part of the effort to increase uptake among the young, Boris Johnson has announced.

The prime minister said he wanted to “serve notice” that both doses of the coronavirus vaccine would be a condition of entry for venues with large crowds from the end of September, when all over-18s will have been offered two jabs.

He declined to rule out extending the requirement to pubs and football stadiums, adding that the government “reserves the right to do what is necessary” to protect the public.

Speaking today, Paul Scully, the business minister, said he was “uncomfortable” with the move while one cabinet minister said it was a
