Pressure mounts on transport firms to make Covid-19 masks mandatory

The mayor of London has admitted that his plan to continue requiring masks on the Tube when coronavirus restrictions are dropped next week is “imperfect”, amid confusion over whether other transport operators and retailers will follow suit.

Sadiq Khan said keeping masks as a condition of travel on most of the city’s transport network would “reassure” passengers, adding that he was not prepared to put Londoners “at risk” by removing the rules on face coverings from Monday.

Adding to confusion, Grant Shapps, the transport secretary, said he supported Khan’s decision even though his government was scrapping the law making masks mandatory.
