France threatens to veto Brexit deal

France will veto a Brexit trade, security and fishing deal that is not in French interests, a minister warned this morning.

The French hard line, supported by a bloc of five other countries, has created new obstacles in negotiations by removing political space for Michel Barnier, the EU’s lead negotiator, to find a compromise.

Clément Beaune, the French Europe minister, who is close to and speaks for President Macron, has flourished the French veto over a deal, an unusual step at this delicate stage.

“If there were a deal that isn’t good which in our evaluation doesn’t correspond to those interests, we will oppose it,” he told the radio station Europe 1.
