One of the country’s most acclaimed singers has said she struggles to pay her rent as she attacked the “dark powers” of the music streaming business.

Nadine Shah, a Mercury Prize-nominated musician whose new album was hailed yesterday as one of the best of the year, told MPs that she did not make enough money from streaming platforms to “keep the wolf from the door”.

The artist was joined by Guy Garvey, the singer with the band Elbow, and Ed O’Brien, who plays guitar for Radiohead, in calling for an overhaul of how musicians are paid by streaming platforms such as Spotify.
